This is an ongoing project to create vector fish for prints on paper, wood, and apparel. I’ve been teaching digital art at the university of Hawai’a at Hilo for a few years. While I’ve created logos using vector software, I’ve never created art or illustrations. The challenge I made for myself with these fish was to not use any standard gradients. Everything must have a hard color edge. To create the illusion of gradients, I created custom dot patterns that emulate the old Ziptone transfers that cartoonists and manga artists used in the previous century. These are my first five for this project:
